Oh God, Not Another Pairing Meme.
Good Christ it's December already, where has this year gone and how can it be possible that I'm finishing it in exactly the same place I was last year - no job, no money, and not much hope of getting either any time soon? Am I really totally surplus to requirements? Isn't there any way I can break out this ridiculous rut of nothingness I've ended up in?
This is, however, not going to be an emo post of emo - that was just me reflecting that honestly, this situation I'm in is fucking ridiculous and fucking tedious. What I actually wanted to do today was do another fandom pairing meme where I get to rant about what I do and don't like about various Weiss Kreuz pairings.
The meme itself asks for a list of fourteen different pairings - they can be from anywhere - and asks for opinions about each of them. I decided to challenge myself and try and do the whole thing with Weiss Kreuz pairings, because I Like Weiss Kreuz and also I don't really have strong opinions on pairings for any other series, unless you count the fact that I don't really get any pairing for Death Note except just maybe Near/Mello as a rival ship with lots of fighting for top and Mello usually losing because his inferiority complex re: Near has to remain ever-present, and I also think that School Days would have ended a lot more happily and left me feeling a lot less RAGE-ful if Kotonoha and Sekai had ditched the jerk and got it on together. Even so I can't really say I ship those pairings.
So, as this meme has no title either, I've made one up. This meme is now known to me as:
Oh Christ, it's the Revenge of the Pairings Meme.
Note that throughout this post I will be using 'Aya' to refer to Original Recipe Aya - that is, the female one. If I mention pairing someone with Aya, I mean the female one with the boobs and all. Her brother already has a perfectly serviceable name of his own - Ran - so, for the sake of clarity, I will be referring to him as Ran.
* As regards Ran/Ken, my fondness for the pairing when it's done well comes with the sadly-for-the-state-of-the-fandom MASSIVE RIDER that Ran and Ken both have to remain IC. I don't like Ken the lovestruck, tearful uberuke who needs Aya to protect him, I don't like Ran being deeply masterful but amazingly tender, I don't like it when the story portrays their wub as sew deep and sew twu, and so very Hollywood. Consequently while I like the idea of them together I hate the fanon interpretation of the pairing, and 98% of the fics about it, which often looks like hatred from the outside.
Here Come The Questions:
1. Why do you dislike #11 (Schuldig/Youji) so much?
Because it makes. no. sense. It's a ridiculously popular slash pairing with absolutely nothing behind it save for maybe the idea that they look hot together, when in my opinion they don't even do that. Most of the fics I've seen involve them meeting in a club (Youji-goes-clubbing-and fics being a regrettable fandom staple) and running happily off to randomly fuck, never mind that Youji is straight and has no reason whatsoever to trust Schuldig. I'm told I'm a pretty good Youji ficcer and when I tried - in an attempt to find out how to get the pairing to work in a way that wasn't stupidly contrived - to talk writing a Schuldig/Youji fic over with
cards_slash, neither of us could come up with a single scenario that wasn't wildly coercive on both parts. That's one I-like-to-believe good Youji ficcer, and the best Schuldig ficcer I've ever come across, and we couldn't think of a single IC way to get them to have consensual sex. That, to me, says something about the pairing.
2. Who do you know that ships #13 (Omi/Aya)?
Oh, oh, I know the answer to this one! Of course, it's
pichi, who is the sole reason I'm interested in Omi and Aya as a pairing in the first place. She's really given me an appreciation for Aya as a character which I just didn't have before I met her, and she really makes that pairing - which should by rights be utter crack - work. I still wouldn't go so far as to say I actually shipped it of my own accord, but I certainly do like the way she handles them and, when she does it, I can totally see it and root for them.
3. What would be your ideal scenario for couple #3 (Ken/Omi)?
I don't really have one, but anything involving Ken being an adorable dork and dragging Omi down with him works for me. With bonus points for ice cream and 'did I just do that?' freakouts.
4. What is your favorite moment for #1 (Youji/Ken)?
Oh, that'd be that little bit in the bushes just before they go into the museum. Or maybe the time they spied on Aya and Sakura. No, it's the strip club sequence in Verbrechen. Or maybe Episode 21 in its entirely, or Episode 6 of Gluhen. Or that bit on the beach at the end of Dramatic Precious, or that time Shouta wakes up where Youji sings the jingle, or perhaps that confrontation outside Yuriko's flat, or--screw it, I can't choose, there's too many good ones. Every time they're together works for me!
5. How long have you been following couple #6 (Ran/Ken)?
I've liked them pretty much since I got into the fandom, but at that stage I would read more or less anything as long as it wasn't terribly-written, as I hadn't actually seen the show and had no idea how OOC or not the stories were. My interest in them as a pairing took a sharp downswing once I'd actually seen the series, though - not because I now considered the pairing unworkable, but because the way the fandom handled it struck me as absurd. Ran and Ken are rivals, for all they're on the same team: if more people wrote Ran/Ken as the rival ship they are I'd be a lot more fond of the pairing, but it's really rare to see that. I don't have a lot of time for Ran as this masterful lover who knows what's best for Ken even better than Ken does, and who Ken is so utterly codependently in love with he can barely even function without. And, sadly, that's what we usually get.
6. What's the story with #8 (Crawford/Schuldig)? What made you stop caring?
I don't really know, I just... outgrew them, I guess. I realized a little while back that I just couldn't really see them as a viable couple any more. While I do still see that Yeah It's Hot, I think I prefer them as two workmates with a kind-of friendship who hold a grudging respect for one another while still finding the other guy utterly exasperating, and not a potential couple. I don't dislike seeing them shipped together or think people who do like it are idiots, I just don't want to seek it out and, for myself, I don't understand the appeal now.
7. Which ship do you prefer--#2 (Schuldig/Ken) or #4 (Omi/Ouka)?
Schuldig/Ken, no question about it. Omi/Ouka makes more sense, is far cuter and has far better long-term potential, while Schuldig/Ken barely ever works without Ken getting abducted and/or raped... but that, unfortunately, is exactly why it appeals to me. Twisted crack. Mm.
8. You have the power to make one ship non-existent. Choose from #10 (Omi/Nagi) or #12 (Ran/Sakura).
10 10 OH FUCK 10. I don't mind Ran/Sakura, I just don't get it as a ship because to me it doesn't seem at all romantic. I despise Omi/Nagi. I can't stand that pairing - not only because of what a mess it is considering series canon and the characters involved, who lest we forget hate each other and aren't about to hook up because they're both cute teenagers who like computers, but because of what the fandom has made of it. Nagi is supposed to be Omi's dark mirror, not his one true love and soulmate. It's a horrible, stupid pairing and if I never have to see another fic where Omi and Nagi fall madly in love and re-enact the plot of High School Musical, or (worse) discover it it shoved in in the background of what was otherwise a perfectly serviceable fic for no reason than the author wanted to hook up everybody, or (more usually) everybody save Farfarello and perhaps Ken, who may end up with the consolation prize of Aya-chan, I'll be perfectly content.
9. What interests you about #14 (Ken/Nagi)?
The unexpected canon support, if you take the Drama CDs - most particularly Holy Children - as canon, which I do. Nagi doesn't really exhibit much strength of feeling toward anyone, usually: it's very unusual that he should feel so passionately about wanting to make Ken pay for what he did. Yeah, it makes a mess of the timeline, but the timeline was a mess already so it doesn't matter. There's a lot of unfinished business on both their sides which was never elaborated on in canon, so there's a lot of potential there for a fanficcer to do something extremely interesting with them as a result. It's a bit of a shame that nobody in the Western fandom seems to have done so.
10. When did you stop liking #7 (Youji/Omi)?
A couple of years back, I guess. I can't really remember why I stopepd liking it - again, though, the fandom's way of expressing it drove me crazy. The relationship doesn't seem to have romantic potential in canon, and most of the fanworks for it are really creepy, complete with a ludicrously virginal Omi and Youji turning into Pedobear. Plus, it gets shoved thoughtlessly into the background of every third Ran/Ken fic just so everyone's paired up seemingly regardless of whether or not it makes any sense at all, which really doesn't help.
11. Did your waning interest in #9 (Youji/Ran) kill your interest in the series?
Quite the opposite: it marked the start of my genuine passion for the series. I liked Youji/Ran as a pairing when my interest in Weiss Kreuz was little more than causal, before I'd actually managed to sit down and watch the show and had discovered there was nothing there: it was just an overhyped, overpopular 'they're hot together' crack pairing. I expected Youji and Ran to have epic chemistry and subtext everywhere considering the amount of slash they spawned - what I discovered, however, was all the subtext was between Youji and Ken, and he and Ran treated one another with near-complete indifference, which is even harder to work round than hatred. The total lack of canon support killed it for me.
12. What's a song that reminds you of #5 (Ken/Yuriko)?
I wish I could say it was something compelling and deeply original, but it's not. It's actually Be My Escape by Relient K, and that wasn't even my find, it was
pichi's. It's the lyrics, man. Listen to the damn lyrics and tell me it doesn't work for Ken and Yuriko. I wish it was something less... well, teen-ish, but in fairness Ken's a very young nineteen and Yuriko's not much older, so they're allowed.
13. Which of these ships do you love the most right now?
See Icon For Details. Youji and Ken have been my OTP for many years now and I LOVE THEM, AUGH. Why does nobody else write Youji/Ken?
14. Which do you dislike the most?
Youji/Ran, because there's nothing there in canon and the fandom's ways of hooking them up usually leaves both characters unrecognizable. I'd go into the details about why I disliked them here, but I already did that once and it turned out to be quite a long rant, so in the interests of posting this sometime before the Last Trump, I won't explain again except to say that I don't see the appeal at all and I don't think Youji and Ran do, either, so why this has become the hideous Holy Grail of Weiss slash pairings I have absolutely no idea. If anyone out there really is interested in why I dislike Youji and Ran as a couple so much, here's that link again, knock yourself out.
15. If you could have any of these pairings double date, who would they be?
Can I have Youji and Ken and Ran and Ken and get my OT3 of ultimate hotness and bad tempers out of it? No? Oh, then I'll go the cute route and say Ken and Yuriko could go on a double date with Omi and Ouka, if only because I wish Ouka and Yuriko had spoken to one another in canon because that meeting would have been Epic. Alas, they didn't, so a double date is the next best thing - I think it would be fun to see Ouka and Yuriko meet and, having met, share tips on how best to go about dating a Completely Clueless Boy.
16. Have #2 (Schuldig/Ken) kissed yet? Elaborate if yes.
No, because Schuldig isn't stupid and Ken would have bitten him. I don't really see that relationship as involving a lot of kissing, to be honest. Or even a lot of relationship.
17. Did #4 (Omi/Ouka) have a happy ending? Do you think one is likely?
I think it is very cruel and hurtful of you to ask that question. D:
18. What would make you start shipping #14 (Ken/Nagi)?
A good fic for it. There's not enough there for it in canon to have me making the jump as it is - there's just the potential for it. I'm not interested in Nagi enough to write anything of the sort myself, and I'd need to see what someone else could get from Ken and Nagi before I ever considered trying to write something of the sort myself. As it is, the only fan works I've ever seen that contained the pairing as a pairing - there's one very good one that has Nagi develop a one-sided crush on Ken, but that's not quite the same thing - were uniformly terrible. The first had Ken abducted by Schwarz who were torturing him in an attempt to awaken his dormant psychic powers and Nagi telekinetically raped him, and Nagi was also raped because abusing a telekine is a fantastic idea, and the second was even worse because Nagi was a whiny Goth and Ken was... I dunno, but they were both in Venice for some reason. Neither of which exactly sells me on the pairing. Someone could do, but it hasn't happened yet.
19. If only one could happen, which would you prefer--#2 (Schuldig/Ken) or #6 (Ran/Ken)?
Eh... while I personally would actually prefer to see Schuldig/Ken happen, it would be a very short encounter that would probably leave Ken fucked over both physically and mentally, to say nothing of scarred for life. So, for the sake of the mental health of a boy who doesn't have a lot of stability to spare, I'm probably going to have to say Ran/Ken, just because while it's interesting to speculate about the damage Schuldig could do to poor little Kenken if he had him at his mercy, I wouldn't want to actually watch it happen to him in canon. At least if Ran/Ken played out in an IC manner, it wouldn't fuck Ken over in a very nasty and irreperable way that would lead to him becoming a rather different character.
20. You have the power to decide the fate of #10 (Omi/Nagi). What happens to them?
Honestly? They react to one another in an IC fashion, meaning that they both utterly despise one another because of what the other represents. The whole thing turns out to have been a sham on both their parts to have got the other guy's defenses down, and they ultimately both try to kill one another only for their teammates to break it up - Schwarz because Crawford can tell that Nagi killing Weiss's leader would upset the board in the middle of the game, Weiss simply because they value Omi's life.
Now, wasn't that better than yet another entry of Emo? I thought it was better. And now I am going to eat and sleep, because I only got 4 hours' sleep and, though I may be trying to hide it, I'm not doing very well today mentally.
Also, does anybody have any damn idea what text I could put on this icon? (ETA: Yes,
rokesmith did. Thanks to him for that.) I've wracked my brains for hours and I just can't think of anything. I'll consider more or less anything at this point - single words, lyrics quotes, quasi-profound statements, you name it. Just as long as it has something to do with Youji and Ken and yes, they have been doing exactly what it looks like they're doing if the scanned page I saw was any indication of the rest of the doujin. Needless to say, I would rather like this doujin myself. Oh baby.
This is, however, not going to be an emo post of emo - that was just me reflecting that honestly, this situation I'm in is fucking ridiculous and fucking tedious.
