My website, for the three of you who like to visit it in all its pointlessness, is likely to be offline for a while.
See, I've decided that it costs too much for someone on my budget of luncheon vouchers and small copper tokens with holes punched through the middle to keep paying for webhosting that I don't really use. A desperate scramble across the wider 'net for a free webhost without too many adverts or spyware who'd tolerate my uploading fanfiction with the word 'fuck' in it has so far proved unfruitful. So, as I can't afford my hosting bills and have nowhere else to store my data, I'm just going to have to let the page go offline for a bit.
I'm not happy about this for numerous reasons for while Pale Movies may be a pointless website that nobody ever visits, it's my pointless website that nobody ever visits. (Also I'm still paying for the domain name, which won't expire until 2011.) But I've spent hours today trying to find a reliable free hosting service which won't shove immense, hightly obtrusive banner adverts all over my pages or throw a fit about the fact my website likes to use a tiny amount of CSS, and I've so far turned up a big load of nothing.
I haven't used free webhosting since 2005 at least. I don't really know what I'm doing any more, what to look for, what's reliable and what isn't. I've been at this for so long I'm suspecting and second-guessing everything. The user reviews don't help much and I don't know what 'review' sites are neutral and which ones set up by companies to make their own services look good.
I'm about two seconds away from signing up for Geocities again out of SHEER FRUSTRATION.
Though I am currently trying to figure out something with a friend (and she knows who she is) who also wants webhosting which would allow me to steal some of her webspace, I'm still trying to work out if there's any way that will stop me being a drain on her. Also, on the offchance that this falls through - and I know better than to presume things will ever run smoothly, ever these days simply because I know my luck and life has very comprehensively proved to me that if shit can go wrong, it will do - I really need some other ideas on what to do about this. So, while I'm hoping for the best from out of this plan, I'm still expecting the worst for the very simple reason that This Is Me, and whoever's in control of my life right now, because it sure isn't me, seems to delight in driving me over and around as many bumps, potholes and dangerous corners as possible.
So. If any of you guys out there still use free hosting - what do you use, what for, can I point a domain at it, and do you reckon I could upload fanfics about Ken getting sexually harassed and then some there without anyone particularly noticing? Are there any fangirl-friendly free hosts out there these days and if there are, which ones? I'd rather take the word of someone I know than 'Mike from TN'.
