Jhonen Vasquez is perhaps insane. But he does it so amazingly I find it hard to fault him. He makes me laugh in an entirely wrong way. I know it shouldn't be funny, but there's a problem: it is. Very.
I'm actually pretty impressed by what I've seen of the Saiyuki manga so far. I haven't bought translated manga in quite a while due to the expense, the Americanization and the fact that the stuff I want to read never used to be picked up for translation anyway, but this does seem to have been rather better-translated than a lot of the stuff I used to see. Good to see they're explaining cultural notes now rather than just Americanizing them.
... fact is, I've always thought manga sold to a rather different audience than anime did - especially anime that ends up on network TV, so they pretty much had to start translating better. The people who took on Sailor Moon and didn't translate it so much as bowdlerize it and turn it into a Spawn of the DiC Dub deserve to be beaten over the head with a hefty Japanese dictionary. Generally speaking, it does seem to be better done than once it was.
I've changed my mind about that one - she's actually Crawford's niece (as well as being Persia's daughter and all the rest of it). Because I've always HATED it when Mary Sues show up and start calling Crawford 'uncle' and get absolutely no response from him. So think my Sue has to do it so that I HATE HER MORE. As if that was possible, considering I utterly detest the horrible spawn already and want something hideously hideous to happen to her. It probably won't be spoiling too much to say the beast will get her much-deserved comeuppance in the end, will it?

I think everyone's Christmas holidays are a bit like that. Lack of time to self and too much time watching television. Or not, as the case may be, because I don't watch much TV and I don't like my parents' choice in shows anyway. God damn, I hope I brought that email I've been horribly neglecting over the past oh my god how long is it now?!? Feel free to shoot me; I'm such a lousy correspondent!
